Additive Manufacturing Desktop printer
Analysis of the Polymer Desktop printer market

In just twelve years, Desktop Additive Manufacturing has changed fundamentally. The Ultimaker 2, released in 2013, cost around EUR 2,000 and printed at 30 to 300 mm/s. The Bambu Lab P2S, launched in 2025, sells for roughly EUR 500 and reaches 600 mm/s – a 75% decrease in costs, twice the print speed and significantly improved component quality. The ecosystem has grown alongside the hardware: 3D scanners, laser engravers, materials, build platforms and slicer software now complement the printer itself. Market entry has become almost risk-free for companies and private users alike – and desktop systems have evolved from prototyping tools into the cornerstone of medium- and large-scale production, from drones to decorative home furnishings.
94% of all Desktop Additive Manufacturing printers are produced in China, and four of the five largest OEMs by units sold in 2025 are based in the Shenzhen region. Manufacturers such as CREALITY, BAMBU LAB and ELEGOO have grown into global players whose portfolios extend far beyond printers – including 3D scanners, laser engravers, recycling systems, materials, slicers and digital model libraries. Major filament and resin producers such as ESUN and SUNLU are located in the same region. The remaining 6% of global production is split between Europe (4%) and the rest of the world (2%). Demand, by contrast, is spread across APAC, EMEA and AMER, with the U.S. as the largest user market, where more than 90% of users are private individuals.
Artificial Intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in Additive Manufacturing – today mainly in design and in the printing process itself. Our market overview shows that the majority of available solutions address Design/Simulation and Printing, for example through image-based detection of first-layer defects, clogged nozzles, foreign objects or extrusion failures. Post-processing and quality management, in contrast, are barely covered and remain well below their potential in both maturity and impact. Yet this is exactly where the greatest leverage lies: support removal, part sorting, quality control and the orchestration of queuing and machine setup. Prompt-to-CAD and image-to-CAD tools additionally lower the barrier to entry for users without CAD skills.
